Hardscape & landscape project for entire property in Mill Valley, Marin County, California.

Artificial grass for backyard, driveway, fencing, garden lighting, mulching, planting, sod, retaining walls, stairs & stone patio.

Rainbow Landscape Irrigation & Maintenance (landscape contractor) did hardscaping and landscaping work that included the front yard, side yards and backyard at this property in the city of Mill Valley, Marin County, California.

For the front yard, the following work was done: a new driveway was built where 2/3 of the area is a concrete surface and the remaining 1/3 of the area has 4" x 4" x 4" black basalt cobble stones. Also in the concrete area of the driveway, we laid out 4 strips of 4" x 4" x 4" black basalt cobble stones horizontally. The stairs were made of concrete with sand sitting, and then we installed 48" x 6" x 6" black basalt stones on the 5 stair treads with built-in garden lights in the walls on both sides. These stairs were built with the purpose to connect the sidewalk with the main entrance door. Concrete garden beds were built, which were later filled with new topsoil, shrubs were planted and then redwood mulch was applied. A drip system was installed to water the shrubs with only the necessary water. A mesh fence was installed in a portion of the front yard, just to cover the front of the lawn area. This lawn area has natural sod with drainage and an irrigation system. Also a 12" x12" x 2" black basalt stone walkway with sand sitting was built to connect the main door area with the left side yard.

Side yards: on the right side yard, the existing wooden fence was removed and a new redwood fence measuring 110 ft long x 6 ft high was built going from the garage door to all the way back of the house. In both side yards, decomposed granite was spread on the surface and square-shaped step stones were placed along the house from front to back. In the left side yard, a garden bed was built between the house and the neighbor's house where privet plants were planted to grow as a privacy screen and then this area was mulched using 1/4" redwood mulch. Also, a new redwood fence measuring 40 ft long x 6 ft high was built to cover a partial area on this side of the property.

The backyard was totally changed, we started by grading the surface in two ground levels and hauling away the entire removed dirt. Concrete retaining walls were built to separate both levels. Unlike the front yard, the homeowners decided to have artificial grass installed in the upper in the upper level of the backyard to save money in the long run by considerably reducing water use and maintenance labor in the backyard. The type of artificial sod installed was PP-80 Fescue Blend from Better Than Real Artificial Grass (www.BetterThanRealGrass.com). Then concrete stairs were built and we installed 48" x 6" x 6" black basalt stones and artificial turf on the 5 stair treads. We also installed  built-in garden lights in the walls on the sides. These stairs connect both upper and lower levels. A space of 4-ft  surrounding the artificial lawn was left for planting dwarf palm trees, privets and shrubs, and then we applied redwood mulch in this 4-ft strip. These plants added a dry tolerant landscape to the upper level making it look completely natural with the artificial lawn while saving water for landscape use at the same time. A stone patio with 48" x 14" x 2" black basalt stones with sand sitting was built on the entire lower level.
