Rainbow Landscape Irrigation & Maintenance (landscape contractor) did hardscaping and landscaping work at this property in San Rafael, Marin County, California. This landscape project included both the front yard and the backyard.

The first phase of this landscaping project included the front yard only. The homeowners had let their natural grass go because of the quantity of water needed to keep it in a good condition, the regular maintenance they had to provide and the expensive water bill they had to pay.  They wanted a cost-effective, very low maintenance and reliable solution to have a beautiful green grass all year long. They knew they could achieve this with artificial grass. Since one of the objectives was to minimize water use, they added dry tolerant plants surrounding the artificial lawn to make it look even more natural. New top soil and 1/4" redwood mulch were applied in the planting areas as well. The type of artificial sod installed was PP-80 Fescue Blend from Better Than Real Artificial Grass (www.BetterThanRealGrass.com). Also, a sitting bench over bluestone stepstones and garden lights were incorporated to enhance the landscape in the front yard.

A few months later, the clients decided to move forward with the second phase of this landscape project, which included the backyard. The entire backyard surface was graded in two levels. A stone patio was built with irregular-shape bluestones over a concrete base. Then artificial turf was installed in the rest of the lawn area in the backyard with a redwood retaining wall to separate both ground levels. Rainbow Landscape installed the same type of artificial grass than the one installed in the front yard a few months back. Then stairs with a landing step were built using redwood in the edges with flagstones and pea gravel in the middle of each step. These stairs were built for going up & down between the low level and the high level in the backyard. Planting and mulching were done along the fence of the backyard to enhance the landscape as well. New topsoil was applied with the new plants. The type of mulch applied was 1/4" redwood mulch. A drip system was installed to water these plants with minimum use of water.
